I love the challenge of finding the insight that connects a jar of mayonnaise, or an insurance company, or even a vaccine to a person, then distilling it down to its very essence. I never feel like I am selling products or services, but something else more universal – comfort, relief, freedom, joy, love, relief.
Making things simple has taken me years of practice and I am still learning.
Companies that have hired me notice I work well with others – whether they’re my partners, my staff, account people, clients, editors, or the cleaning people whom I’ve gotten to know over the years. I am a patient person, but not when it comes to finding that nugget of truth about an assignment. Then, I am relentless.
I feel my greatest personal skill is a sense of humor (not that you will find evidence of it here).
I like dogs and cats equally and do not play favorites. I can say the same thing about big consumer brands and start-ups. I have worked on both with the same tireless work ethic.
I read constantly, and am an unabashed consumer of culture – movies, fashion, comedians, trends, design of any kind, food, and music.
I find advertising confounding at times. But I still love it. Steve Hayden (the writer of the Apple 1984 spot) once supervised me on an assignment on the smallest account at Ogilvy, and I felt like the best Christmas present anyone could give me.
My father once told me advertising wasn’t a stable business to be in. He was right. But the people I have met in advertising have inspired me, taught me a lot, and even have become my extended family.
And, try as I might, advertising, I can’t quit you.
